Appointed Senior Grecian and deeply engaged in philosophy and economics, Hoyeon has thrived at Christ's Hospital both academically and personally. Music has been a defining aspect of his time here; through his commitment to learning the violin and saxophone, he has performed both as a soloist and a member of the CH band at major events.

Where it all began

‘I lived in Korea until I was seven, then moved to the UK with my family. After seeing an advert for Christ’s Hospital, we attended an open day. I was taken in by this incredible school and by the time we left, I knew this was where I wanted to be.'

Being offered a place at Christ’s Hospital

When I found out that I had been offered a place, I was ecstatic, though I didn’t fully grasp just how significant the opportunity was at the time. I think that sense of how special it is, only really hits once you’ve experienced Christ's Hospital — and maybe more so after leaving, when you look back.‘

The opportunity of a bursary

'When I arrived in the UK, private education was completely out of reach, so without the incredible level of bursary support from CH, I wouldn’t have been able to attend a school like this. Everything I’ve achieved here has been possible because of that support.'

Inspiration for the future

'I originally wanted to pursue software engineering, but studying philosophy and economics has completely changed my interests. The way these subjects are taught, the challenge to think independently, to question and discuss has captivated me. This has led me to apply for philosophy, politics and economics at university, for which I have gained an offer to study at the University of Oxford.

Music has been a defining part of my CH experience. I started playing the violin in year two and continued at CH, where I also took up learning to play the saxophone. The support and opportunities for musicians here are exceptional. I’ve had multiple opportunities to perform each term and learn how to organise, practice and work as a team.'

Making the most of every opportunity

'My biggest achievement has been making the most of everything the school has to offer. I’ve taken advantage of different aspects of CH life, from music and sports to academics and leadership, which is something I’m very proud of.

More specifically, our undefeated run in the Ethics Cup finals at St. Andrews was a real highlight and being chosen to perform in the Angus Ross Concert, which gave me a chance to perform a concerto on the Violin, backed by an orchestra mixed of students and professionals, is something I’ll possibly never get to do again. Finally, attending a trip to Korea as Senior Grecian and helping to promote Christ's Hospital in my home country, was a very memorable achievement.'

'At Christ's Hospital I have challenged myself, which has helped me to develop confidence, independence and perspective. CH has taught me to manage my time and responsibilities. My critical thinking has been developed through discussions, both in lessons and during clubs, including School Council, which has encouraged me to speak up and to listen. Being appointed Senior Grecian has been valuable in helping me build leadership skills, learn how to support and organize a team, and work collaboratively with staff and students alike.'

Memorable Moments

'Winning House Singing with my avenue house was a massive moment. It’s a huge event here, as it brings everyone together early in the Michaelmas term, being the first time the house works towards a collective goal. I remember how ecstatic we were to come second when I was in Second Form, so to finally lead us to victory for the first time in nearly a decade was unforgettable. We won again the following year with Grecians West, and seeing stubborn 18-year-olds giving it their all to a Disney medley is something I’ll always hold onto.'

Looking Ahead to the Future

'I plan to study philosophy politics and economics at university, and I’m particularly interested in diplomacy as a career path. CH laid the foundation for that as I developed my interest through clubs like Model United Nations (MUN) and our Ethics Cup debates, where I was able to develop my communication, negotiation, and public speaking skills. I’d love to keep building on that at university and beyond.'

Thank you for believing

'If I could thank a donor personally, I’d say thank you — not just for helping someone like me come to a school like Christ's Hospital, but for believing in the potential of children whose families might not have the means to access these kinds of opportunities.  Even being here, it’s sometimes hard to fully take in just how lucky we are. Your generosity doesn’t just fund an education, but the chance to grow, be supported and make the most of everything Christ's Hospital offers. It’s changed my life – and I know I’m not the only one. So, thank you.'
