Iona Popat (LHB, GRE 09-16) Tackling homelessness through social enterprise, Iona is transforming lives through her work at Fat Macy’s, a social enterprise that trains young people in culinary and hospitality skills, while supporting their transition from hostels to independent living. Iona puts people on a training programme to gain 1-to-1 support and work experience through volunteering at the charity’s restaurant Sohaila, while ensuring they maintain their housing benefit. In turn, restaurant profits fund a housing scheme, which offers them a path to independent living. ‘Fat Macy’s is about opportunity, dignity and a way out of homelessness. It’s inspiring to see people gain independence and build their futures. Being part of this work-both on the frontline and at a strategic level has been incredibly rewarding. Barriers that keep people trapped in the hostel system are removed, giving them skills, confidence and financial security. I’m proud to be part of something that makes real change happen.’ Photo: The team at Fat Macy’s
