Betsy, Deputy Grecian (Year 12) Living in London and experiencing seeing people on the streets, has inspired Betsy to use the opportunities given to her at Christ's Hospital to give back to the community, something that she looks to do more of in the future. Photo: Betsy volunteering at the Christ's Hospital Christmas community lunch. 'In community action at Christ's Hospital, I take an hour out of each week to spend time with people in care homes, to offer them a friendly face to talk to or play games with. It is a chance to give something back to the community and equally improve people skills and communication. Last term I made handwritten Christmas cards (each featuring a picture of Christ’s hospital on the front!) and distributed them to different care homes to give residents a-bit of Christmas cheer with a personal touch. People in care homes can have a hard time around Christmas, away from family and friends. Making Christmas cards was a way to help those who may be feeling lonely, feel less alone. Additionally, I wanted those who may not get Christmas cards that year, to receive one and let them know people care. It gave me a sense of joy. At a time such as Christmas where charity and giving are prominent, I want to put some of that spirit into action and by doing the Christmas cards I felt as if I was doing something that would make a positive impact. I love supporting the local community and want to help vulnerable groups who may be struggling. Living in London, I find it hard to see the number of people out on the streets, so this is something I would like to get involved in. Volunteering helps to aid growth in appreciation, gratitude and empathy. I think it is very important for everyone to get involved in a way they can. I hope to do more within the school in terms of charity in the future!'
