Old Blue Takes the Helm of Historic Livery Company

Christ’s Hospital is proud to celebrate the election of Matt Tilbury (BaB, MdA 80-86), as Master of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers.

Matt was formally appointed on 2 July, marking a significant milestone, given the longstanding relationship between Christ’s Hospital and the Company. CH currently has four students generously supported by the Ironmongers, plus two new presentees starting this September.

Even more notable is the fact that Matt was originally presented by his Livery Company during his time at school. His journey from pupil to Master represents a powerful “full circle” moment, underscoring the lasting impact of these early connections and the strength of the School’s ties to the Livery movement.

Matt’s installation ceremony also carried an added Old Blue connection, with Hugo Deadman (LHB, LHA, 79-86), officiating as the Company Chaplain.

The Ironmongers' Company has long been a valued supporter of Christ's Hospital. They were a founding Livery Company in 1552, with their first presentee arriving at the school in 1580. This appointment provides an exceptional opportunity to build further engagement within the Livery community. As Master, Matt will serve a one-year term, acting as ambassador for his Company’s charitable work while strengthening networks across the City.

Several events are planned to make the most of this unique moment for Christ’s Hospital over the coming year – please look out for further details. The School looks forward to working closely with Matt during his time in office and celebrating the opportunities this historic appointment brings to strengthen relationships and support future philanthropic initiatives.
